The word ‘bara’ means twelve and ‘pula’ means piers, hence Barapullah is so called because of its 12 piers one which the bridge rests. It was once the most handsome bridge in Delhi, which is 14 meters in width and over 195 meters in length.

Built in 1621 it was one of the many bridges that were constructed over tributaries of the river Yamuna to be able to connect Delhi to Agra. Unfortunately, the tributary now remains no more than an open dirty drain.
